Tuesday morning had a delightful cool breeze, but it was supposed to warm up later in the day. Indications Tuesday were that the runoff Democratic Primary race would bring the fewest voters to the polls in modern times. The ash from the eruption of the Mount St. Helens volcano has traveled around the world and is back over North America. Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. is the beef burgundy or stuffed cornish hen dinner at Garrison Chapel Baptist Church. The first seminar on effective communications given by Jim Rutledge is tonight from 7 to 10 p.m. The second seminar is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p m. Both will be held in the Tryon Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The winners of the local Heart Fund Tennis Tournament, Digit Laughridge and Lee Haslam advanced to the District Tourn ament at Morganton where they advanced to the finals before they lost. Church To Burn Mortgage The members of St. Luke C.M.E. Church will celebrate the paying off the debt on the church building,Sunday, June8th at 4:00 p.m. A former pastor, Rev. Charles H. Roman, pastor of Holsey Memorial C.M.E. Church, Statesville, N. C. will deliver the message. Mrs. Mamie H. Walker will give the history of the church and the mortgage will be burned during a special ceremony by members of different auxiliaries. A repast will be served in the Dining Hall by the women of the church. Members and friends invited. are 50th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Klopfen stein of Doylestown, Ohio, Paul Klopfenstein of Alliance, Ohio and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Clapper of Robertsville, Ohio, recently returned home after spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs Henry Klopfenstein of Green Creek. Their visit was in observance of the Henry Klopfensteins’ 50th wedding anniversary. Also, Mr. and Mrs. John H. Hunter of Taylors, S C. entertained them to a dinner at their home. The honorees received cards and greetings relatives and friends. steak many from WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4, 1980 $2,257,732 Budget Presented To Commissioners At the County Commissioners meeting on 2 June, 1980, the County Budget and Finance Manager Marvin Wagner pre sented the budget for 1980-81, a total of $2,257,732. This included 8 percent across the board salary increase; and in education 18 percent increase in school expense and 40 percent increase in capital outlay; day care funding for 30 children in Tryon (Jervey-Palmer Building) and for 10 children in the Mill Spring area, preferably at Polk Central High School. The audit contract with Guthrie & McCoy was renewed for $4650, which is $200 less than previously, reported due to an improved accounting system. Curt Eargle presented the proposed budget for Harmon Field and this was discussed. It included a total of $35,620, hopefully $27,695 from the township tax. The Soil Conservation Person nel was granted a County blanket funding for secretary and small expenditures (as are many agencies such as county health, mental health, etc.) Among other business, it was announced there will be a special meeting for the Fire Depart ments and related personnel at 7:00 p.m. on June 9, 1980 in the Agricultural Room. Dr. and Mrs. Purcell plan to retire here in approximately 12 years, and until that time plan to leave their land vacant. Baseball Awards The Tryon High School Base ball team’s Most Valuable Player Award went to Barry Skipper and the Most Improved to Davey Edwards. RECREATION COMMITTEE ELECTS OFFICERS The Polk Committee, and elected ers: Pres., County Recreation Inc. met May 22nd the following offic- Barry Miller; Vice Pres., Linda Womack; Sec., Patsy Williams; Treas., Harriett Blanton.
